Vinnie Jones - Elvis fan.

Vinnie wearing a TCB t-shirt in CBB

Those who are longterm subscribers to our magazine may remember that I conducted an interview with Vinnie Jones some years ago. Vinnie is currently in Channel 4's Celebrity Big Brother and I was delighted to see him wearing a TCB t-shirt in last night's episode. If I know Vinnie, there'll be some Elvis talk in the CBB house soon. Keep watching!

Crazy?

A lady just called the office asking if we knew anyone who wanted to buy a stuffed HMV Nipper. The soft toy dog originally came from the Paul Lichter collection and was supposedly from Elvis' 1957 Californian tour. The buyer was informed that Elvis "romped" on stage with the toy, but we've never seen any evidence of this happening. The above photo shows a "solid" nipper, the one in question is a soft, stuffed version.

The required amount... £20,000.00!!!!

Any thoughts on the story (we can guess your thoughts on the price)? email me at editor@essentialelvis.com

Dr. Nick book update...

Just moments ago I received my preview copy of Dr. Nick's book entitled The King And Dr. Nick. I have been kept in the loop regarding this long awaited project with transcripts, and I honestly believe that this will be a book warmly received by fans around the world.

In my opinion, it's a fantastic and interesting read. It's beautifully written and an extremely important part of the Elvis story that needs to be told. I respect and understand that not every fan will wish to purchase this book, but for those truly interested in Elvis - the man, you'll find it fascinating.

See my quote on the back cover of the book, above.

This book will be added to our offers page in the new year.

Deluxe Edition of Elvis 75 - In Stock Now!

The deluxe edition of this beautiful set (with a release date of December 28th) arrived just moments ago, and it looks fantastic! Many were concerned about the set being rather flimsy (like the I Believe packaging) but it's quite the opposite. On first inspection it's really sturdy with a high quality booklet. I have to say, I'm very impressed.

Obviously, being Christmas Eve, we'll not be able to dispatch in time for any festive listening, but we'll get to work on sending sets out as soon as we can.

This item will be added to our online offers page within a few days.

Elvis: King Of Las Vegas - Now in stock!

This incredible book has just arrived from Europe, but sadly not in time for Christmas. It was delivered just a few minutes before we closed on the 23rd, which did not leave us time to re-package each book and dispatch before the last courier delivery today (24th).

The good news is that the book is stunning. Over 300 pages with 1000+ pictures - most in colour and many are rare and unpublished. If you've pre-ordered we'll obviously get your copy sent out as soon as we can after Christmas. Our apologies if you ordered this book as a festive gift. Our hands were tied to the late delivery caused by the weather.

The book will be added to our online store within a few days.

New Elvis magazine due January 9th

Well, since returning from Memphis on the 9th I've been sitting in front of my PC putting together the latest magazine, which finally went off to the printers today. It actually turned out to be 68 pages in the end.

Being a man, I've never found multi-tasking easy and so I've not had time to do much else over the last few days. Because the magazine needed to be designed as quick as possible to meet the deadline, my correspondence with many of you has been a little slow.

My apologies for being elusive recently. I have a habit of almost hibernating when I've an important job to do. Anyway, I'm now done, and looking forward to the next week or so with the stress of being a magazine editor over for a while.

Back to the mag...

The next edition will contain some BIG surprises in terms of content and appearance. I've great pleasure in announcing that it'll be in full colour, with a fresh new design. In my opinion, the new look equals anything that you may find on the high street. I'm sure you'll enjoy what myself and the team have been working on.

There is also a ton of great articles, features, reviews and interviews for you to enjoy. Plus the usual news, reviews etc. Here's what to expect with our next edition...

CIRCLE G RANCH
Andrew Snelgrove tells the story of Elvis’ beloved ranch in Mississippi and reports on its fate with recent photos taken earlier this month.

THE ALDENS
I've gathers the entire Alden family and talked to them about the short time that they shared their lives with Elvis Presley. This long and indepth interview (with sisters Ginger, Terry & Rosemary, brother Mike (who worked security for Elvis in 1977) and mother, Jo) includes RECENT PHOTOS OF GINGER AND HER SISTERS TAKEN THIS MONTH!!!

ELVIS AT PRESTWICK
Trevor Simpson takes a detailed look at Elvis’ demob from the US Army and his visit to Prestwick Airport almost 50 years ago.

THE STAX SESSIONS
An article from Peter Lewry detailing Elvis’ first Stax session in 1973.

I’VE LOST YOU IN THE HEART OF ROME
Trevor Simpson exclusively interviews Elvis songwriters Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley.

A LITTLE LOST CONVERSATION
Shayne Driscoll has unearthed a fascinating lost Elvis interview from Las Vegas in 1971.

ELVIS AND DOBIE GRAY
Trevor Simpson’s article / interview with Dobie Gray; songwriter, singer and Elvis influence.
.
Please make sure that your subscription is right up to date as you'll not want to miss this bumper 75th birthday edition of the world's brightest Elvis magazine.

You Can't Keep A Good Website Down For Long!!!

I've just been talking to our website designer and our new site will go live TOMORROW (Friday 27th)!!!

I must stress that this is a brand new website and has no connection whatsoever to the old site that was attacked and eventually destroyed by hackers. This new site is completely safe with a new secure host and all precautions in place. So you can feel 100% confident in clicking on the link below.

There will be one or two pages that will still be under construction, and a little tweaking needs to be done here and there, but the website will be online within hours.

This signifies an end to a rather unpleasant period as far as our online dealings are concerned. It's been a tough few months but "only the strong survive" and we're about to bounce back bigger and better than before.

Thanks to all of you who have offered kind words of support and encouragement.

The countdown is on...http://www.essentialelvis.com/

Small (but important) update...

Firstly, due to my trip to Memphis the office will be closed from this Friday (27th) and re-open for business on Monday, December 7th. So, if you could hang on to those emails and wait until we get back until you make those phone calls, that would be helpful. There will be someone at the office, but the order line will be closed during the above period.

I have some incredible things lined up for the new magazine. I'll be visiting some great new places on the Elvis trail. I have meetings with some amazing people for interviews including Barbara Hearn, Dixie Locke, Dr. Nick, George Klein, Bill Morris and Al Holcomb ("Mr. Bear" from the new Gladiator DVD).

Our new website will be up within a few days. Keep your eye open at www.essentialelvis.com for something special.

Happy Thanks Giving to our friends in the US.

Damn Those Impersonators!

Now and again we get a great photo sent to us here at the EE:UK office. Today I received one of the cutest from my good friend, Andrew Whitehouse in Linconshire. The photos above is Andrew's son, Reuben. Andrew called the email, "These impersonators get bloody everywhere!!!!" but I think we can definitely handle this kind!

More Website News (and a sneak preview)

So many of you have contacted is with sheer disgust regarding the hacking, and eventual destroying, of our website. Well, this is all now behind us and I've pleasure in letting you know that our brand new site will be online for you all to visit within days.

Stuart McMorran, our designer, has been working hard in coming up with a great-looking, modern website. We're all excited about what he has come up with and for the first time, you can see the homepage above.

Bringing you right up to speed...

Right at this very moment we have a top quality website designer busy working on a brand new site, which should be up and running in around 10-14 days. Due to the hacking that we experienced with our old site, we have decided that this is the right time to offer something fresh and modern with a more up-to-date look. Our domain name will stay the same, and we hope you like what we're planning. Watch out for an announcement / update here on our blog.

We can let you know that the new website is looking fantastic. It'll feature everything that the old site offered, but it'll be easier to look around with a really cool, contemporary feel.

Elvis & Dave Hebler
Ouch!

It's not often that I laugh out loud these days, but I've just talked with Dave Hebler, Elvis' former bodyguard. British fans may recall that comedian Frank Skinner made a documentary several years ago (during which I acted as consultant) that featured a meeting between Frank and Dave in Miami. We touched on the subject and Dave surprised me by saying, "Tell Frank that I still have a warm fuzzy feeling whenever I think about me whacking him in the throat!"

I know Frank will crack up... I've just text him!
Some BIG changes on the way for EE:UK

As we rapidly approach the end of 2009 I find myself looking forward to a fresh year with optimism. To be perfectly honest, the last few weeks have been fairly testing as far as business is concerned. Firstly, we've had our website problems, which caused a considerable amount of damage, loss of time and cost. Now the dreaded postal strikes are adding to our problems.

As a result business has certainly been affected and as expected the rumours started to circulate around the Elvis world. Let me assure you that no matter what you may’ve heard through the grapevine, we are fighting fit and bursting with fresh ideas for the future.

Now and again a business might get hit with a series of problems that’s completely out of its control. These difficult times have certainly made us stronger and even more determined to continue to serve Elvis fans throughout the world with a fantastic magazine and a friendly mail order service.

Thankfully, I have a superb team behind me who are the best at keeping me on top form with encouragement and much needed support. Outside of my family, Mike Burton, Diane Johnston and Trevor Simpson have been extremely instrumental in steering the good ship Essential Elvis though stormy waters. Thanks to these great friends and the large number of you who contacted me with messages of appreciation.

I've realised that I've been flogging a dead horse as far as our main website is concerned. The damage that was recently done by hackers is so severe that I've decided to scrap the site and have a brand new, fresh homepage designed. In a few more days you'll be able to access a new EE:UK website that will outshine the old one. I'm very excited about what's being done and I can guarantee a terrific change when visiting us on line.

Our new magazine is due back from the printers on Friday, but guess what? The bloody postal strikes mean that we'll not be able to dispatch them until Tuesday next week. It's certainly worth waiting for. Packed with interviews, features and reviews etc., I can recommend setting aside a few hours for a brilliant read around the middle of next week.

There will soon be a BIG announcement regarding our magazine. It's a change for the better and I'm pretty sure that what we've got planned will be the talk of the Elvis world for quite some time. We'll let you know what's going on as soon as we can.

Thanks for standing by us over these last few weeks.

My Apologies Once Again

You may find that our website is still coming and going a little. This is because we are doing some major construction work and re-designing a few of the pages. We'll get things back to normal again ASAP, with some exciting announcements to follow soon.

Elvis - The King Of Vegas

Yes, we will be stocking this incredible new hardback book which will cover Elvis' years in Vegas from 1956 to 1976. It will look at his concerts, holidays, his wedding and there will be a full list of stage costumes worn at his concerts (for the first time).

Expect 360 pages with 1,200+ photos. It'll be a huge, heavy and very lavish book. Same quality as The Concert Years but thicker!

As soon as we get confirmation on the price, we will add it to our online store. Of course, you can pre-order by calling our orderline on 01903 525917. Either way, your credit card will NOT be charged until the item is released and in stock.
We're back!

After a short period of maintenance in order to ensure our main website is completely free from problems and running safely, it has now re-opened and things are back to normal (thanks to Mike and Diane). As everyone knows, we were targeted by hackers who attempted to cause as much turmoil as possible to our business, but to quote the title of a great Elvis song - Only The Strong Survive.

Again, I'd like to underline the fact that we are still very much in business and the recent website problems have not effected the company in the slightest. We are working on several exciting future plans including some groundbreaking interviews and features. Watch out for a big surprise announcement in the New Year.

Our mail-order department and online store is now running smoothly and you'll find our courteous and fast service easy and trouble free.

Again, thank-you all for your support and understanding.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

As many of you know, our website was recently hacked. As a result of the attack part of the site has had to be re-built and it will take a few days to carry out the work and ensure that things are running safely. We have enlisted the help of a professional who has informed us that everything should be back to normal within a few days.

Because we take the issue of Internet security seriously, we have made the decision to temporarily block access to our main site (essentialelvis.com) whilst the work to repair it is being carried out. We apologies for the inconvenience.

Sadly, when these things happen, the rumours begin to circulate. We'd like to ensure everyone that there are absolutely no other problems in connection with the company, the publication of our magazine or our ability to offer you the usual professional and courteous service. Our website has been hacked - and that's it.

So, it's business as usual. Our website situation is a temporary issue that we are working on fixing. All other aspects of the business are running smoothly, as per normal, including our mail order department.

Obviously, over the next few days, you'll be unable to place orders or (re)subscribe through our website. May we invite you to call the office on 01903 525917 in order to process your purchase(s) and so that we can take care of any queries. Alternatively, email me directly at
elvismagazine@aol.com.

I really appreciate your understanding and patience, and thank-you for the hundreds of emails of support and the messages of disgust that we were attacked in the first place. All the encouragement from around the world has been really enspiring.

Best wishes,
Andrew Hearn

The Elvis World - One Big, Happy Family?

Sadly, we have discovered today that there has been an attempt to hack into our main website and plant a virus. The hacker has caused some damage that needs to be repaired. We are working on putting things back to normal, but this may take a few days. The process is costly and time consuming, but we are hoping to have everything corrected by mid-week.

The damage was obviously caused by another Elvis organisation and we have our suspicions who is responsible. Serious investigations are taking place and we will certainly proceed with legal action if we can.

It's apparent that Essential Elvis UK is looked upon as a threat by one or two other groups / fan clubs. The hacking is an obvious sign that our success is such a major concern to another Elvis organisation that they feel threatened enough to try and cause as much damage to us as possible.

This, along with other conspiracy related events of late, has only made us stronger. We are now more determined than ever to offer fans a great service and a terrific magazine. We are stepping up our game with some incredible plans and we will be making some exciting announcements in the next few weeks.

Apart from the temporary website problem, everything is as normal and running as it should be. Please email me (editor@essentialelvis.com) or call the office (01903 525917) to make enquiries or to place orders.

Essential Elvis UK is here to stay!

Best wishes,
Andrew Hearn

Sanford Thompson Has Passed Away
.
Sanford Thompson, the father of Linda and Sam Thompson, has passed away at Linda's home in California. Elvis loved both parents and bought them a home just yards from Graceland.
.
Linda and her father at Graceland - Christmas 1974

Linda said today, "Thank you for praying for my dear father. He passed away peacefully tonight, surrounded by family and loved ones. I was blessed to have him live with me for the past 10 years. He was a good, kind, patient, and devout man... I know that he is now an angel in God's Heaven, and with my mother. He was a WWII vet, and lived a good life of unselfish service to others. I will miss him immeasurably. I will love him always."

Out thoughts and prayers are with Linda, Sam, Louise and all the Thompson family.

Another Elvis site gone in Memphis!
Pop Tunes closes its doors

A victim of changing music tastes, digital downloads and the Internet, Pop Tunes shut its doors just yesterday. The historic original store at 308 Poplar, and a second location at 4622 Faronia, were closed by Music City Record Distributors, the Nashville company that had owned Cat’s Records and acquired the Pop Tunes stores in 2001.

“I could see it coming,” said Steve Burge, manager of the Poplar store for 35 years. But he didn’t know when until a Music City executive arrived at the store to close it just after noon.

A subscriber to EE:UK, who is also a postman, has posted the following on Facebook. We thought the information might be of use...

"For those who haven't received their EE:UK mags yet; as a postie, its my duty to inform you there is a huge backlog of mail all over the UK due to the on-going strikes Royal Mail are having. No fault of EE:UK"
.
And by the way, we're not going out of business, neither are we closing or suffering in any way. Subscriptions are healthy and we've some exciting future plans. We can only assume that one or two green-eyed monsters are posting false rumours on various messageboards.

George Waite Has Died

George Waite, a Kenpo practitioner and producer of the soon-to-be-released film that was funded by Elvis called The New Gladiator has just passed away after a year-long illness. Thank goodness a deal was struck with EPE to get this film out, but sad that George never made it to the release date in a few short weeks.

Wayne Carman and Andrew Hearn - Memphis 2004
.
Elvis' 1974 "The New Gladiator" karate movie
It's gonna happen... and soon!
.
Almost ten years ago I sat in a room used for board meetings in a hotel in Memphis. Myself, Sonny West and a chosen few sat around a large oval table, facing a TV screen. Professor Wayne Carman, one of Elvis' karate partners and well-known martial artist, had just purchased Elvis' "dream project"... and we were about to see it for the first time.
.
Memphis 2000
.
We all sat wide-eyed as we witnessed almost an hour of "The New Gladiator" in perfect quality. Elvis looked sensational in the footage, which was originally shot in Memphis in 1974. Wayne himself appeared in much of the footage, and this had prompted him to spend his life savings on the reel of film. There was also another source of motivation for Wayne. He believed that Elvis wanted the world to see his dream project come to fruition, and meetings with EPE would soon commence in order to make it happen. That was back in 2000, and I have enjoyed a close relationship with Wayne, and his wife Susan, ever since. They are the nicest people.
.
A short time later I had arranged to fly Wayne over to the UK to meet the fans. We had agreed to show the footage at the event, but a letter from EPE's lawyers arrived here at the office theatening to sue if the event went ahead.
Sadly, the event had to be cancelled.
.

The doomed event in 2001

Forward to July 2009, and EPE have finally announced the release of this ground-breaking DVD. Wayne will provide the commentary, and fans all over the world will soon be able to see Elvis' dream project, just as I did in 2000. The release date - early August.

Click here for a short, UNSEEN clip from the forthcoming DVD

You can pre-order your copy - WHICH WILL BE OUT WITHIN A MONTH - by clicking here, or calling our orderline on on 01903 525917.

Toby

Again, apologies for the non-Elvis post but so many subscribers / friends from all over the world often ask me how Toby is getting on. Many are surprised to hear that he'll be 7 years old next month. His Uncle Mark (Polly's brother) recently took some great photos, which sum up Toby nicely. Enjoy the film...

Wakey, wakey EPE

I'm disappointed...

Those who subscribe to our glossy publication know that the subscription fee is paid for a positive magazine. As editor I believe that good money should not be spent to read about my own personal views regarding the Elvis world, especially if I'm having a moan. But, this blog is free and you don't pay for it, so here goes...

The flyer designed and distributed by EPE to encourage fans to visit Memphis for Elvis Week next month has just arrived. It's packed full of impersonator competitions / photos. There's karaoke and impersonators. And of course, impersonators.

It makes me feel that I've made the right decision to go to Spain with my family this year instead. As far as I'm concerned, EPE are making it clear that "Elvis" is not at the top of their list of attractions, and therefore keeping people like me from finding any reason to attend.

Come on EPE, you're rapidly getting a very pink and fluffy reputation!!!

UPDATE...

So, today the latest EPE catalogue arrives. Mickey Mouse dressed in a jumpsuit, Elvis pyjamas and flip-flops. No mention of Ken Sharp's forthcoming book Elvis: Vegas '69. Too sensible perhaps?

So, to calm me down, I begin to flip through the local paper. To my horror, I'm greeted with a full-page colour photograph of an Elvis impersonator. Instead, I decide to take a look through the supplement that dropped out on the floor... Another impersonator, looking like a sweaty Jim Brennan (from EastEnders) in a wig. I need to shut myself away in a dark room and listen to As Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis through my headphones. It's a great live concert by a guy called Elvis Presley... remember him?

...end of moan.

Could this be the reason why many fans now prefer to stay away from the Graceland area...

ADVANCE WARNING
EE:UK Office Closed For A Couple Of Days Mid-Month

The EE:UK office will be closed on Thursday, 16th and Friday 17th July as we will be in the studio overseeing the finishing touches / edits to the Elvis, The Beauty Queen & Me DVD with filmmaker Peter Bluck from Play It Forward Media. Peter is a very busy man and studio time is precious and costly so unfortunately, these two available dates must be taken advantage of. Plus, we are keen to work towards a release date in August.

I apologise in advance if you call on either of those two dates and get an answerphone. However, if you do, please leave a message with your phone number and someone will get back to you later on those days.
